After the ground is properly prepped for a seeding application we install a measured amount of seed onto the ground through a mechanically driven seed Drill and or Seed Spreader. This method is perfect for warm-season grasses such as Buffalo, Brome, Native grasses, etc. We also use this same method to install cool-season grasses such as Fescue or Bluegrass. With Bermuda, Buffalo, and Native grasses, we feel that hydroseeding has an advantage, but does represent a higher upfront expense.
This is a very popular method for establishing new seeding growth in Hi-Flow or sloped areas to aid in the prevention of erosion. How this happens is we mix a carrier such as shredded paper or shredded straw mulch into a tank, where we also add a tacking agent, fertilizer, seed, and water. We mix tank well and spray or paint the areas we are seeding. There are numerous options to this platform and we have had great success with this seeding method. It is priced higher than Dry Seeding but cheaper than Sod and often more effective.
In our region sod is a very popular alternative to quickly establishing a yard. Sod can be installed about any time of the year as long as watering can take place long enough to get the roots established, which will take 10-14 days. After this period the grass will continue to need watering but not near as much as during the high heat season. We install Bermuda & Fescue type sod. Buffalo grass is also available but typically only used on commercial applications and is very expensive. Sod is the most expensive of all options yet the quickest way to establish a lawn. For best results, proper ground prep is required and sod should not be installed on top of existing grass or vegetation of any kind.
